IC info

Name: Jiminy Cricket
Age: Like two and a half months. Crickets live to about three months usually.
Canon: Disney's Pinocchio
Alignment: Neutral Good turned Lawful Good. And like, with elements of the really badly done Lawful Good where he'd rat out his buddies for littering.
Canon-Point: I'm gonna say a week or so after the end of the movie/right around that weird "Let me tell you the story of my good pal Pinoc" opening.
Character History: Throughout casual references in fifty years of media and numerous 1950s PSAs, we can track that he's got a pretty big family, including a grasshopper nephew. He probably isn't particularly close with them though, because, as far as we know, Jiminy has been a traveler for a while by the start of the story. When he ends up at Gepetto's, his suit is ragged and patched and his view on magical wishes is "sounds made up". He's also done some shady shit, given he's apparently good at lockpicking newer models. His life was probably largely about surviving through the realities of Italy as a tiny creature.

Then the plot of the movie happened. History done.
Character Personality: To talk about Jiminy Cricket, we need to talk about Italy. In the 1880s, Italy was going through a period of unification, supported by Pinocchio author Carlo Collodi who wrote Pinocchio to encourage local children to follow these new rules of going to school and not sending your parents to jail. A talking cricket tries to persuade Pinocchio to follow these new values, only to get killed. The cricket represents this quiet, but important voice of morality in Collodi's eyes.

Now fuck all that shit, because Disney's gotta strip Jiminy of this original context and insert 1940s American values onto this weird green alleged cricket. Going to school and listening to elders is still in there, but now we gotta show how evil smoking and playing pool is. Oh and patriotism, up that shit to eleven, Jiminy's gotta dutifully march on the sidewalk for every parade god bless america.

So basically, Jiminy's core principles all revolve around the status quo. Even if he hasn't done the things Pinocchio's done, like go to school, these ideals are important to Jiminy. He's utterly disgusted with the idea of associating with actors, gamblers, or any allegedly nefarious element of society. Jiminy completely ignores that, unless there's some kind of cricket school, he's been living on the edge of society for a while now and stumbled into meeting the Blue Fairy. He's kind of like Ben Carson? Got lucky as shit to find success and is now like "well if you just follow the rules, it all works out."

As you might bet, Jiminy is a creature of hypocrisy and pride. He blatantly broke into Gepetto's house to rest and claims to be a good at picking locks, all while proclaiming the importance of traditional values. His initial reason for helping out Pinoc is seemingly to impress the Blue Fairy and even after getting the job he's like "hey but can I get a gold badge too". Later, while mocking Pinocchio's decision to become an actor, he starts staring at female pupeets with lust. Which is, like, really weird. At one point, after Pinocchio calls Lampwick "my best friend", Jiminy gets extremely huffy and leaves Pinoc in a creepy island of drinking and smoking. He tends to be angry, prideful, and even self-serving.

That said, for his many flaws that I tend to overemphasize, Jiminy is a good guy at heart. He cares about his friends and wants to act in their best interest. The first time he leaves Pinocchio, its after he believes Pinocchio is an acting success and is perfectly fine without him. Later, after seeing what happens to the visitors to Pleasure Island, he immediately saves Pinocchio's bacon and helps him escape. He jumps into the ocean to search for Monstro and Gepetto and never abandons Pinocchio throughout the event. And more than anything, for all his sass and pride, he's polite and friendly more often than not. However, likely due to his time on the road, all of his ego is tied up in being "better" than the people around him. The idea of a minor moral failing in front of him isn't really a threat to society like he claims: its an attack on him for not doing enough.

Abilities: He jumps real good for his size, a good four feet or so. He can float down with an umbrella. He apparently can pick (1880 model) locks.
Motives: For all his fixations on morality, we can assume Jiminy's spent a long time breaking into houses and resting for a night. When faced with the donkeys of Pleasure Island, he grabbed Pinoc and bolted. As far as we know, he never went back for them. For all the magical sights around him, he's got a realist edge to him he can't shake. The man compromises his supposed values for himself (and his loved ones) much more than he'd care to admit.

On the other end of the spectrum, he can impulsive and egotistic, especially in regards to his pride. If he killed by accident, he'd be pretty willing to hide the evidence to erase his shame and worth as a conscience. That's the most important thing about him and betraying that would destroy him.

Regains:
- His older, ratty clothes. Just the vest, if an entire outfit is too much
- The matchbox he slept in at Gepetto's
- one of Gepetto's clockwork figures
- a horseshoe from Pleasure Island
- The Pinocchio storybook he reads
Would you be like your character to have a plot-intensive role?: Sure, that'd be fucking weird for a cricket to have and I'm into it.
Would you like to volunteer to have your character be involved in a case?: No real preferences, I'm up for whatever
Do you have any other notes/concerns for your character that you'd like to mention here?: Please stop me if I ask if I can make House of Mouse canon
